Trakr - An introduction to my final major project
My initial idea for my final major project was to create a city guide for Hull. It would have included a mobile version, Google maps integration, reviews and ratings and possibly text messaging integration too. Although Rich & Jay (my lecturers) liked and approved the idea, I wasn't convinced by it and wanted to do something more interesting and different.
After a few days of thinking I came up with the idea of creating a central place that you could use to keep up to date with what your friends are up to on other web sites such as Flickr, YouTube, Digg, Amazon.co.uk, etc. Data would be displayed on a Facebook style update page with videos and pictures being able to viewed directly on the page. Alternative interfaces in the form of an interactive flash timeline and an Adobe AIR desktop application will be also created to add more scope to the project.
Next came the name for the web site. Again, I was having trouble thinking up ideas and only came up with Friend Tracker or Track my Friends which aren't very good or unique as most of the web sites that my web site will interface with all have catchy names like Flickr or YouTube. On advice from my lecturers I created a post on the New Media Forum asking for suggestions to which I got the name Trakr which is a lot nicer. Thanks Nick!
