Unit Brief

The aim of this brief was to produce a proposal, web site and evaluation document. The web site should have a clear vision of function and purpose and demonstrate high levels of professional awareness, sensibility, creative and innovate technical abilities relevant to the professional orientation of commercial web design.

This brief also included producing a five thousand word dissertation related to my project which is available as a PDF on the right.

Proposal

After several brainstorming sessions I came up with a few different ideas. One of which was a city guide, but that wasn't a very different or innovative idea so after much consideration I chose to go with an idea for a web site that tracked your friends activity on other web sites. This helps users save time as they don't have to visit each web site individually to keep track of what their friends are doing and also requires a high level of technical knowledge to build.

Research

At the time of my original proposal there weren't many other web sites doing what I proposed. Those that I found are analyzed in my proposal document. I also got feedback from users on what features and web site sources they would like to see.

Planning

First, I created sketches of my initial ideas. From this, I refined them taking into account feedback from users then started creating the web site in HTML/CSS. At the same time I was experimenting with the technical aspects of my project and getting the functionality working on plain non-styled pages. Once this was working I merged it with the design.

Final Piece

The final web site is available at:

Review

This was an exciting project to work on as it involved lot's of technologies and techniques new to me. I was able to successfully create a professional web site that allowed users to gather data from multiple sources into one place in an attractive interface.
